THE YR THAT GOES SLOWLY
. . .
i have a deep desire for a year that goes slowly, along with a deep desire to read the books i have been meaning to and should have read by now. i suspect the 'year that goes slowly' will be either a journey across the cities of the mediterranean or india.my request is that you advise me which books you think i should read. Tell me which books were infulential (life changing?) on you and a snippet of why. my promise is to read it
. . .
Being a silly or perhaps a firy Aries, for me a slow year should be spent on reading American Virgin's edition of "The Bad Girl's Guide To Getting What You Want".

Read Bhagvat Gita - of course its ancient but is amazingly relevant in today's context - its teaching you how to live a spiritual life while being a part of the material world...

Most certainly you need, at least, to flick through 'New York Beautification Project'... a documentation of NY artist Ellen Harvey's miniature landscape paintings conducted around New York's streets between 1999-2001 {without permission}. Her curious paintings are a magical respite from city life...they are portals to other worlds...

I think that you should read "Life - A Users Manual" by Georges Perec.
It taught me to think in all directions at once.

three important and influential books from friends recently:
Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals, Random House, 1971 / A gift from Roger Matland which taught me the best and worst aspects of 'pragmatism'
Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals, Granta Books, 2003 / A gift from Sarah Ichioka that contributed to a very difficult period, though was helpful in confirming some of my most radical views on humans
Monogamy, Adam Phillips, Faber and Faber, 1996 / A gift from Partha that related to a long evening discussing the merits of relationships in 21st C city life
