outline for my dissertation (as at december 2006) to be submitted in sept 2007:
a written paper with substantial design sections that draws attention to how the converted warehouse flats, new build flats and tall buildings (canary wharf) alongside the thames can be retro-fitted to be useful 'soft' working wharves again. the essay will explore the potential changes that will result from the transurbanism and retro-fitting in a re-understood globe that has resulted from the increasingly problematic energy context
the essay chapters are likely to include:
i. theory and the thames – the contextualisation and understanding of the river thames over time (London)
ii. a stock-take of the thames – the nature/design of the buildings and its immediate environment today – major changes in the last 25 years
iii. discussing climate change and London and the discussed implications – building on work by the futures programme within government, the RIBA etc
iv. responding to the changes – the retro-fitting of spaces and places to meet these changes – proposing design alterations, the return of the working river and shipping
it will be presented in book format, with a proposed exhibition of the design sections in the early winter, search will soon start for a publisher.
work in progress to be shown here over the coming months
