DESTROYING ONE'S LOVE

the aim here is to create a catalogue of how people change city spaces, spaces they have moved to as they have been drawn to them and how they then undermine or destroy what it was they loved about the place. this catalogue should be understood in urban planning terms and be factual. send in your evidence and it will be added to the catalogue.

hoxton square
hoxton square, that place, has been changed by its newest residents, those in the very new flats that surround it. they have forced the borough to close the park at 5pm each day (even friday, saturday, sunday have been changed to 5pm now) yes it is odd that the square has railings around it in the first place and yes a few people do jump the railings but its now gone, changed by the people who moved there, very recently. these are the same people that forced some of the clubs close by to close early, too early for some who had to close down and the same people that have made it illegal to have a drink outside any of the pubs in the precious summer evening light
. . .barbican centre / 'lakeside'
post a publicworks talk in the barbican centre this summer we all desired a drink, where else on a summer evening but the waterside cafe on the 'lakeside'. we were shocked to find out that the waterside closes at 19:30. of course we could not bring our own bottle of wine and use the vast area and many seats. we learnt that the closing time was forced onto the barbican by its residents, who felt that the noise from people eating and resting by the 'lakeside' were too noisy. shocking

spitalfields
it was as clear as clear that its all over in e1 when this fake beach arrived on dray walk, truman brewery this summer. it was there all summer to keep reminding that irony, dearest irony seems now to be lost out east

bobby gillespie, the alma, newington green and n16
a classic beautiful illustration of 'destroying what one loves' - the independent newspaper reported that bobby gillespie, of well known hedonistic band 'primal scream' has written a formal complaint and opposed a licence application to allow the alma public house to extend its hours and allow live music! amazing, just amazing! http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article2160093.ece
